Dumbarton Public Realm
In recent years we have carried out extensive upgrading works to the Public Realm in Dumbarton Town Centre, including Phase 1 Dumbarton Gate, College Street, Risk Street, the associated Car parks & Wynds, and High Street Phases 2 and 3, improving the appearance of the various streets and spaces within Dumbarton Town Centre, in accordance with Dumbarton’s Public Realm Design Guide.
These works included the renewal of the various hard surfaces to roads and footpaths, improving and extending car parks in and around the town centre, and implementing traffic restrictions within the central section of the High Street to control congestion, in response to various research and a public consultation of 2004.
Key to providing a brighter and enhanced town centre we substantially upgraded the street lighting system and refurbished the wynds and closes connecting pedestrians from the car parks to the High Street, and carried out builders work refurbishment to two underpasses.
These works were funded by West Dunbartonshire Council, the former Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire, the Scottish Executive's Public Transport Fund and the European Regional Development Fund, and incorporated the highest quality of workmanship and materials as follows:-
The majority of these works were carried out in close proximity to the heart of the town centre and demanded close and successful liason with shopkeepers, bar and restaurant owners and the general public throughout.
The Principal Landscape Architect for these works provided feedback in accordance with Constructionline Quality Assurance and reference procedures to confirm that their practice was “totally satisfied with the overall quality of product” and in respect of workmanship that Landscapes and Contracts Ltd is “One of the best we work with.”

Renfrewshire
We are immensely proud that our staff and employees played a significant role throughout the 1990’s in the upgrading and regeneration of Paisley Town Centre’s Public Realm, and are the current proud sponsors of the Paisley 10k fun run.
Paisley Abbey Public Realm of 1996 won a Bali award, and was the centre-piece of Paisley’s £12m Public Realm Programme on which our Brian MacAlister I. Eng.,M.I.C.E Contracts Manager, was the Engineer’s Representative, throughout. Brian MacAlister has a proven track record in this sector and has overseen all of our similar projects since joining our team in June 2005.
A significant proportion of our staff and Employees worked with Brian on Abbey Close and various other high quality works to Paisley’s Public Realm during this period, and the principles learned have helped make our Company what it is today, where around 40 full-time Landscapes and Contracts Limited site employees undertake all Civils and Landscaping works on-site, ensuring that programmes are implemented to suit the project rather than the demands and requirements of hired-in subcontract labour.
Note that our considerations in respect of programming are based on restrictions imposed by public safety, businesses, shops, traffic and the general public in consultation with our various Clients.
Examples of our attention to detail as extracted from our Standard Procedures:-
All riven material, Caithness flagstones, sandstones, etc are delivered in pallets of constant colour, pre-stacked with spacers to protect edges and approximately equal thicknesses for ease of selection and laying. The laying of natural riven material, where the units are shaped from the sand beds from which they are split, is slower and requires a far greater level of skill than that required for the laying of pre-cast modular units of uniform thickness.
The design life of a high quality project should far exceed that of a similar project constructed of pre-cast materials, and should hence be constructed meticulously, sympathetically and considerately.
Our method of work and close liason with traders, businesses and the public etc, mean that no complaints will be made to our head office, and that any issues that come to light through the regular progress of the works are addressed as they arise by our site staff. A teamwork spirit is to be adopted at all times between all parties involved.
Works are progressed through evenings and early mornings as required to minimise the disruption to the ongoing town centre as appropriate, and our method of work involves attending to all cutting-in, adjusting iron work, grouting, sanding, etc, as the works progress, and attending to any snagging highlighted during daily or weekly inspections by the Engineer, which will enable all areas to be completed sequentially.
Regardless of whether or not sectional handovers are dictated by the Contract Document, our method of applying a rolling programme to our projects where many identifiable individual sections exist, minimises the number of sections that are in progress at any one time, in turn reducing the impact of the project on the Town Centre and all those who use it, still allowing continuity for all of our site staff.
